Evaluations

What to expect at OBA Evaluations

Pinto (7-8 year olds)

Date:

Saturday January 7th

Time:

Each player will be assigned a start time between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM.  The entire evaluation process will take approximately 45 minutes per player. Start times will be assigned at close of registration.

Check in:

There will be a check in station at the entrance to the Sports Field on the Wagner Ranch side.  Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your assigned start time to check in and warm up.

Attire/Gear:

Players should dress warmly in baseball clothes in layers as it will likely be cold and damp that day. Each player should bring/wear to the evaluation a baseball hat, baseball glove, rubber cleats, and tennis shoes (in case of rain, we will be on blacktop).
Stations/skills:
1)  Base running: timed running from Home Plate to 2nd base.

2)  Infield Station: fielding a medium hard hit grounder at shortstop and making the throw to 1st base.
3)  Hitting:  Wiffle ball hitting station (bats will be provided)
Process:

Pinto evaluation is conducted by the Commissioner, Managers, and Coaches primarily for draft purposes. It is our goal to create evenly matched teams for the regular season and to provide your player with the best opportunity to learn the game of baseball, improve basic skill levels, and Have Fun!

Mustang (9-10 year olds)

Mustang evaluations will have registration and warm-up period from 9:15-10:00 a.m.  The evaluations should run from 10:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. 
 
Players should dress warmly in baseball clothes in layers as it will likely be cold and damp that day.  Each player should bring/wear to the evaluation a baseball hat, baseball glove, rubber cleats, baseball bat, batting helmet (if you own one)[OBA ones will be available], and water.
 
Stations/skills:
1.    Basic Throwing and Catching: throwing and catching from 60 feet apart.
2.    Infield Station: fielding a medium hard hit grounder at shortstop and making the throw to 1st base.
3.    Base running: timed running from home to 1st base and from 1st base to 3rd base.
4.    Outfield: catching fly balls and throwing to the cutoff.
5.    Live Hitting:  hitting off of an adult practice pitcher.
6.    Batting Cage:  hitting from a pitching machine at approx. 40-45 mph. [if available at evaluation site].
7.    Optional Pitching Station:  evaluation of form, speed and accuracy of potential pitchers.  (Will not count towards determining 96 players, but will only be used for league draft purposes.)
 
Process:  Evaluation by neutral evaluators at each station on January 8th.  Scores tabulated the following week, followed by OBA Baseball Committee discussion, followed by announcement of 96 payers on Tuesday, January 17, 2012. 

Bronco (11-12 year olds)

Evals are Sat, Jan 7th at Wagner (

11u and 12u 680 candidates 9-10:30am , House league: 10:30 check in, 10:45 start.

)

 

Pony (13-14 year olds)

 

The Pony coaches evaluate the players based on their participation in Fall Ball, Evaluations and previous OBA experience. Evals are Sat, Jan 7th at 1:00pm at Orinda Sports Field.
